Chippewa National ForestChippewa National Forest:  The Chippewa National Forest was the first of its kind established east of the Mississippi River in 1908. The forest boundary encompasses about 1.6 million acres and has 700 lakes, 920 miles of streams and 150,000 acres of wetlands. The forest's landscape is a reminder of the glaciers that blanketed northern Minnesota some 10,000 years ago.  The Chippewa National Forest also boasts the largest breeding population of bald eagles in the continental U.S., with 150 active nests found throughout the forest.  The Chippewa National Forest makes maps available at the Blackduck Ranger Station for most of their hiking and biking trails, ranging from .5 to 68 miles. Some trails are known for their eagle viewing, others are self-guided nature tours.  You are able to enjoy any one of these recreational activities while in the Chippewa National Forest: Bike, Hiking and Nature Trails, Camping, Canoeing, ATV, Fishing, XC Skiing, Hunting, Scenic Byways and Snowmobiling   Distance:  15 miles away

Camp Rabideau CCC:  Take a step into the past at historic Camp Rabideau, one of three remaining Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps preserved Camp Rabideauout of the 2600 that were established in 1935. Today, 15 of the original 25 buildings remain and 4 are maintained to honor those who served as CCC corpsmen. Interpretive displays highlight the buildings and history of the area.  A one mile trail runs through Camp Rabideau and an open air picnic shelter is available. The camp is located County Road 39 in Blackduck and tours are conducted Sunday and Wednesdays.  Distance:  6 miles away

Itasca State ParkItasca State Park - Headwaters of the Mississippi River:  The headwaters of the Mississippi is located in Itasca State Park. At this park you can actually walk across a path of rocks over the Mississippi River by foot.  Facilities include The Headwaters History Center, Douglas Lodge and the Museum. Amenities include large stands of pine, paved bike trails, Wilderness Drive, U of M Forestry and Biological Stations, Indian cemetery, and Peace Pipe Vista, and endless miles of hiking trails.  You are able to enjoy any one of these recreational activities while in the Itasca State Park:  Bike and Hiking and Nature Trails, Swimming, Playing, Camping, XC Skiing, Snowmobiling and Snowshoeing.  On site bike rentals can be arranged while spending a day at the park.  Click on www.itascasports.com for rental information.

The Lost Forty:  In 1882 a mapping error described the land of the Lost Forty as being underwater, part of a lake, in fact.  This caused the virgin pine of the area to be left behind by loggers at the turn of the century.  Now a one-mile self guided nature trail winds its way through the majestic Lost Forty, a 144-acre tract of white and red pine, located in the Chippewa National Forest.  Many of these trees are up to 350 years old and between 22 and 48 inches in diameter. Distance:  15 miles away

Paul Bunyan and Babe

Paul Bunyan and Babe:  The home of Paul Bunyan and Babe are located on the shores of Bemidji Lake in Bemidji. These two statues are in the National  Register Of Historic Places. Paul stands 18' tall and Babes horns are 14' across. Visitors from all over the world stop here to get their photo taken with these two icons.

                    Horseback Riding in MN

Stein's Winding River Guest Farm:  This farm offers horseback riding adventures for those 8 years and older. They can accommodate groups of 6 people or less. They also have pony rides for younger children as well as wagon rides for groups. These trail rides are all guided thru 100's of acres of private land. Lady Slipper Scenic Byway:  This Lady Slipper Scenic Byway in MN28-mile byway runs through the Chippewa National Forest.  Formerly known as "Scenic Highway, the byway was renamed in honor of the state flower.  Visitors can hike, bike, fish and boat at Norway Beach Recreation Area on the southeast shore of Cass Lake.  This scenic highway extends from Cass lake  thru Pennington and onto Blackduck. Pine and aspen are interspersed with large open areas of wetlands, lakes and river systems which will keep your interests as you travel along. Along your route you will come upon a slice of history at Camp Rabideau, one of three 1930's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps in the country that are being preserved.  Also, with all this water you're sure to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. Buena Vista Ski Resort:  Downhill Skiers, Snowboarders & Tubers will find Buena Vista to be the area's premier spot to enjoy their sport. Sitting astride the continental divide, there are 16 downhill runs, the longest 2,000 ft. boasting a 230 ft. drop. The ski area features 4 chairlifts, a beginners tow, and a three-story chalet with warming fireplace and cafe.

 

Buena Vista in MN

Cross-Country Skiing is something at this high-country site, traversing ideal skiing terrain. Nine lakes and vast forest can be viewed in distant panoramas along Buena Vista's 25 km of trails. The landscape of Buena Vista is exceptionally scenic. The trails meander through forests of pine and hardwood, over rolling hills and skirt the shores of serene lakes. Woodcarvers Festival in Blackduck MN

Blackduck Woodcarvers's Festival:  The Woodcarvers's Festival showcases wood working crafts of all kinds from craftsman across the nation, not just statewide.  You will see vendors lining the Blackduck Wayside Park in Blackduck.  Join us for a variety of arts and crafts and great food!  The festival is located at the Wayside Park in Blackduck along Hwy. 71 across from Timberline Sports/Shell Gas Station.  The 2008 Festival will be held Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 9am-8pm.     Distance:  3 miles away

 

Pine Tree Park in MN

Pine Tree Park:  Pine Tree Park in Blackduck is a well groomed park offered to the  public for bird watching, nature walks, picnics and enjoying the children's playgrounds.  If you are lucky enough, you just might be able to view one of Blackduck's longtime eagle families perched upon their nest, if you look close enough.  It is also common to see deer wandering thru the park or loons and ducks swimming at the waters edge.  The park is located across the road to the West from the Blackduck Golf course and aside the Blackduck Public Water Access.  Picnic shelters are located at each end of the park and toilet facilities are also provided.

Snowmobile Trails in MN

Snowmobile Trails: The Minnesota Northwood's is known for is vast amount of snowmobile trails.  The most popular snowmobile trail our guests at White Birch Resort follow is the Blue Ox Trail from Bemidji, MN up Hwy. 71 N to International Falls, MN.   Our guests  drive their snowmobiles down the roadside trails from White Birch Resort to Countryside Restaurant parking lot and take off on the trail from there.

Historical Society in Beltrami County

Beltrami County Historical Center:  The Great Northern Depot is of historical significance since it was the last depot built by "empire builder" James J. Hill.  It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988.  Built in 1912, the arched framework of the Depot windows represents a neo-classic design.  The depot is also associated with two statewide historical events:  Agricultural Development and Railroad construction and the Northern Minnesota Lumbering era, all of which took place between 1870 and 1920.  The depot represents a broad diversity of people who lived and continue to live in this area.  The depot has been restored to house the Beltrami County History Center , a full-service history center which includes a three gallery museum, research library, gift shop, meeting room and public archives.  Open Mon - Thurs 10am-5pm, Fri 10am-4pm.  Open Saturdays May thru October 10am-4pm.  Located at 130 Minnesota Ave SW, Bemidji.  Contact 218-444-3376 for information.

Winerys in Minnesota

Forestedge Winery:  At Forestedge Winery , wine makers Paul and Sharon Shuster and John Wildmo produce seven to eight thousand gallons of wine per year, but yet craft their wines in small batches.   The winery produces nine different specialty single fruit wines as well as blended wines including Summer Blush (strawberry rhubarb), Headwaters Classic Red (chokecherry rhubarb), raspberry rhubarb, and blueberry rhubarb.  All of these wines are available for tasting and sale in the winery tasting room.

The winery is open May through December, six days a week and closed on Mondays. Tours are available and are designed to allow you to see how these fine wines are crafted, aged and bottled.  Remember, "It's not just grapes that make fine wine!" As Paul bottles a batch of Forestedge Wines, craftsmanship and pride go into every bottle.
